The small village of EINSIEDELN, in the hills of northern Schwyz 25km northeast of Brunnen, has been Switzerland’s most important site of pilgrimage for a thousand years, and still draws a quarter of a million devout believers every year. The village itself is utterly unremarkable, but the mighty Benedictine Kloster (monastery) which dominates it is exceptional, and worth a detour whether you’re drawn by faith or curiosity.
